Because from the moment I walk into a client’s home and sit down with them, my mind immediately begins evaluating their unique needs, personality, routines, and family dynamics. My goal is to carefully match them with the caregiver who will be the best fit for their specific situation.

I also personally train my caregivers. I teach them not only the skills required to provide excellent care, but also how to care with compassion, dignity, patience, and respect. I want every caregiver on my team to provide the same level of care that I would provide myself.

For me, experience is important, but having a caring heart is even more important. That is why I look for caregivers who are compassionate, dedicated, dependable, and genuinely passionate about helping others.

After more than two decades in this profession, I still believe that every person deserves to age with dignity, respect, and love. That belief is what inspires me every day and is the foundation upon which I built Zoila’s In Home Private Care.

Discharge Papers Said She Was Fine: But Home Care Was Essential

Three days after being discharged from the hospital, Mrs. Johnson’s daughter called us in tears.
Her 82-year-old mother had just returned home after a hospitalization for pneumonia and a fall. The discharge instructions were overwhelming. There were new medications, follow-up appointments, concerns about falls, and uncertainty about what symptoms should trigger a call to the doctor.

Like many families, they thought the hardest part was over when mom left the hospital.

In reality, the transition home had just begun.

As a physician-owned home care agency, we understand what happens in the days and weeks after a hospital stay. We know many readmissions occur not because families don’t care, but because they lack the support, education, and guidance needed to navigate recovery safely.

Our team immediately stepped in.

We coordinated care, reviewed medications, reinforced discharge instructions, ensured follow-up appointments were scheduled, monitored for warning signs, and provided hands-on assistance with daily activities while Mrs. Johnson regained her strength.

Most importantly, her daughter no longer feels alone, and Mrs. Johnson is thriving at home without sentinel events and without readmission.

Over the next several weeks, Mrs. Johnson grew stronger, regained confidence, and avoided a return trip to the emergency room. What began as a stressful transition became a successful recovery at home. As a team, we are so proud to see her continued progress and to watch her enjoy aging in place her way.

More Than Housing: She Needed Habits for Hygiene

When Miss X moved into our home in 2024, she needed more than a place to live. She needed stability, structure, and support.

At move-in, her room was filled with boxes and belongings that covered much of the floor, creating safety concerns due to her mobility challenges and increased risk of falls. Personal hygiene had also become a struggle, with showers often being avoided for extended periods of time.

Rather than focusing on the challenges, we focused on building routines and creating an environment where she could succeed.

Together, we organized her room to create clear walking paths and a safer living space. We developed simple daily hygiene and cleaning schedules that emphasized consistency, dignity, and personal responsibility.

Over time, those routines became habits.

Today, Miss X showers daily, maintains a cleaner and safer living environment, and takes greater pride in her appearance. What may seem like small changes represent something much larger: increased confidence, independence, and quality of life.

This journey reminds us that care plans alone do not change lives. Relationships do. When someone receives consistent support, encouragement, and belief in their abilities, meaningful transformation becomes possible.

She Was Scheduled Twice a Week: She Showed Up Every Day

We have a WWII veteran as our client, a centenarian at 101 years old. He is cognitively sharp and physically still in good shape. However, he developed a back problem and had to go to the hospital. His only nearby family member is his son, who lives with Parkinson’s and can’t drive to visit him.

Our amazing caregiver Jasmin, scheduled just twice a week for a few hours, made sure she visited him every day in the hospital and brought him books from home, knowing how much he loves to read. She also drives our veteran’s son to the hospital for regular visits.

We have been coordinating everything with him, and when he asked how much longer he’d need to stay, the answer was 1–2 weeks. A little deflated, he said, “And what’s the good news?” We told him the good news is that Jasmin will be right there to help when he gets home and that made him very happy.

Jasmin is a rockstar who goes above and beyond.

After 37 Years Caring for Others, She Needs Care Now

I feel so good giving care to a person who took care of many special education children for over 37 years. She dedicated her full life to caring for others, having no children of her own. Then, after retirement, she became ill after a number of years and had no one to care for her but a friend — and that is me. I took her into my home and have given her care for over 3½ years.

We both volunteered as Red Cross workers, that is how we knew one another. I now have full care for her.

She still has the ability to walk to the restroom and back and remembers all the long-term memories of her travels across 48 states and many other countries. She dedicated most of her life to her immediate family — her mom, dad, and sister — while putting herself on hold. Now I am taking her places and doing as much as I can to keep her spirits alive, given her short-term memory challenges. She is a very special person: easygoing, a little stubborn but not very much, and has much to offer through the stories she tells.

Restoring Purpose Through a Simple Invitation to Help

We had a client whose husband and wife both had dementia, but the wife had spent years serving as her husband’s primary caregiver. When our caregiver entered the home, the wife became increasingly frustrated and agitated because she felt like her role had been taken away from her. Our dementia care specialist suggested something simple: ask her to help set the table. The moment the caregiver invited her to participate, her entire demeanor changed. Increasing Connection With Family Who Lives Far Away

We have an 87 year old client whose family lives in California. This client was becoming more and more isolated; often speaking of missing her family. And, not being able to see her great grand daughter grow up. We purchased an Aura Photo frame for the client, and sent her daughter the access code for uploading pictures. Once the system was set up by the caregiver and ready to use, the client was able to see years of family photos as well as current photos and videos of her granddaughter. The family now uploads new pictures to share at least once a month.

What an impact this simple tool has made in regards to her demeanor. The client is now more interactive and social with the caregiver and waits in anticipation of new photos. She enthusiastically shows off new photos whenever they are uploaded to her photo frame. The client currently has over 500 photo memories to watch and reflect upon. All of which brings a smile to her face!

A Veteran Needed More Support. We Helped Make It Happen.

We have a client who is a veteran and a paraplegic, who has multiple wounds on their backside and having recurrent UTIs. The problem was that he started having signs and symptoms of another UTI. Even the nurse didn’t quite get around to calling us, but when I saw it on the Sensi care report, which prompted us to give a call to the nurse and to the wife to say, “What’s going on?” We had the conversation about his UTI, and then about a new wound because his catheter was leaking. That got him to the doctor, and he was able to get treatment for that, so now it’s decreasing those hospitalization visits.

I printed the Sensi Care Report for the VA coordinator and let him know, “This is what’s going on. This is proof.” We had the conversation that he doesn’t need 12 hours a week. He needs 12 hours a day of skilled nursing because he has multiple doctors visits due to his health complications. He said, “I totally agree with you.” In that one instance, we helped get a Veteran the hours that he needs.

The Program That Reduced Hospitalizations

Through a year-long pilot program with the local PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) organization, we supported seniors with proactive care and intervention designed to prevent health crises before they escalated. The pilot supported 33 seniors. During the program, we identified early warning signs like UTIs, shortness of breath, and congestive heart failure symptoms. We intervened quickly enough to help many seniors avoid emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

The outcomes were significant: hospitalization rates dropped to just 18% among participants in the pilot. PACE estimates that we saved conservatively $350,000 due to avoiding hospital stays and about $100,000 in avoiding emergency room visits.

Never Alone When It Matters Most

One night we detected that a client had fallen. We immediately called her, and together we decided emergency services needed to come. She was scared, alone, and lying on the floor waiting for EMS to arrive. Instead of simply calling 911 and hanging up, we stayed on the phone with her for 30 minutes in the middle of the night until help got there. Afterwards, we called her son to let him know she had never been alone through the experience.

From Crisis to Long-Term Care — in Under 24 Hours

The son, he had actually just had rotator cuff surgery himself, so he was on heavy pain meds, so he was not going to be able to assist his mom who they were discharging on a Saturday. He’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do. I’ve called four other agencies and nobody can help me.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, we got you.’ And he’s like, ‘Seriously?…by tomorrow?” I go, “Yes, by tomorrow.” Within 24 hours we had this case staffed for the next two days. We knew it was gonna be longer than that. We gave him reassurance of we will have somebody there for 24/7 and we will continue working on this schedule for you.” He was so relieved. Three years later, I’m happy to say we still have the client. That client is no longer 24/7… she’s now eight hours a week because she has improved.

A Sunday Afternoon Alert That Saved a Life

One Sunday afternoon, I’m sitting watching football, and I got an alert that something was going on. So I quickly got on the phone and called the caregiver. The caregiver goes, ‘no, Bob, everything’s fine. I’m sitting here with the client and, and everybody’s fine.’ I said, ‘well, do me a favor. Why don’t you go knock on the door of the adult daughter and make sure she’s doing okay.’ And come to find out, she was in the middle of having a seizure. Keeping Families Connected Through Small Moments of Joy

One thing that we do is we require our caregivers to identify something that brings clients acts of joy on a daily basis. We have what we call a family room in our system… Our caregiver can post pictures, activities in the family room of them doing a puzzle with their client… We were talking to a caregiver. She’s like we’re just getting ready to go to Kentucky Fried Chicken. She loves to get her Kentucky Fried Chicken on Fridays… And, you post that in the family room of mom sitting in Kentucky Fried Chicken with a big smile on her face, so her loved ones in California see that she’s being taken care of.

Going the Extra Mile — Literally — Because It Mattered

We have a client who is fiercely independent, but physically he’s very hunched over now, which means he can’t drive anymore. Last month, he called our office really upset because he was craving his favorite antipasto salad and didn’t have a caregiver scheduled that day. My Care Manager, Teri Lovano, wasn’t even on call that day, but she got in her car, drove over to see him, and brought him the salad herself. It was about making sure he felt cared for and not forgotten. When Teri delivered the salad, the smile on his face said everything. Just knowing someone took the time to show up for him meant the world to him.

Reading Between the Lines of Loneliness to Rebuild a Life

We have a client that is 99 years old. He was married for 65 years. His wife had just passed away, so he’s now living on his own and we’re there. He doesn’t really need that much help with his ADLs, but we’re really just there to make sure that he’s safe. We picked up that he was using his TV for like 65% of his day. We were able to kind of pin it down further to when is the TV on most often, and we were able to increase our care for him, but specifically figuring out where he would want to go to get out of the house, whether it’s going for a walk around the park, is it going for ice cream, and just really being able to dial in our care plan to specifically match what his needs were. That’s one of my favorite stories, to be able to give him additional hope after his wife passed and have the caregivers there to really be meaningful and engaging with him.
